Another Win! Round 5 Begins

Okay -- here's the scorecard in this battle to date:

Round 1 goes to cytoxan (a draw)
Round 2 Sabine!
Round 3 Sabine!
Round 4 Sabine!

But first of all, we want to give thanks to all of you for two important things:

1. The power of prayer.

2. The power of human knowledge and development in our medical care system.

[As the old song says, "You can't have one without the other..."]

You all have been faithful friends and family and we have continually felt your uplifting prayers and best wishes. Thank you! Thank you!

As a result of the disease Sabine has (multiple myeloma) it has raised its ugly head in what is called "light chain disease." These nasty little proteins from cancerous cells originating in the bone marrow where the ones that started all this when they jammed up Sabine's kidneys and caused them to fail.

The first blood test (Lambda Light Chains) revealed a level of 10,800 of these protein critters [Mg/L]. The high "normal" level is 26!

After the first round of the Velcade + Dexamethasone chemotherapy they were reduced to 1,470 After the second round they were knocked down to 216. And after this current round (Round 4) the result was even better: only 100 were found in the blood test.

We still have a ways to go. But after our meeting with Dr Sheehan today we are ELATED! And we are ready now to begin ROUND 5 on Monday to knock these guys out!

The Fight

Sabine is fighting multiple myeloma which is presently an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. We first found out about this cancer in December when her kidneys failed. Multiple myeloma can cause organ failure, bone density erosion, tumors, chronic fatigue, a compromised immune system or a combination of these illnesses including a high risk for other cancers (hence the description “multiple”). The kidney failure has resulted in Sabine going to the dialysis center in Madison three times a week for the first seven months. We now have been trained in "home dialysis" and have a machine and all supplies for doing hemodialysis at home -- on our schedule. After a number of rounds of chemotherapy in 2008, Sabine received an autologous stemcell transplant in the spring of 2009. Since that time, her cancer "numbers" have been good.

In this interim, we live each day fully and participate in our monthly support group!
